When a country with a population the same as Croydon reaches its first ever World Cup finals, they’re going to need some extra supporters. We knew that Iceland was every fan’s second-team, so we set about getting them to show their love.
It’s not often I meet the President of, well, anywhere, let alone convince him to do keep-ups in a room filled with valuable looking furniture, but sometimes you just get lucky.
Every fan who signed up got their own Icelandic name and a squad number based on when they registered.
Iceland’s opening game was against Argentina. So, we sent Icelandic comedian Steindi on an undercover mission to Buenos Aires.
The result was the equivalent of a stadium full of new fans from across the world pledged their allegiance by the start of the World Cup.
Iceland proceeded to not win a single game and went out in the Group stages.
